Resources for Military Families

Picolata Crossing Elementary supports our military-connected students and families.

Picolata Crossing Elementary is proud to support our military-connected students and families with a military kids club. The military kids club is designed to address the unique lifestyle of military families. Benefits to our students include easing transitions, meeting other military children who share similar circumstances, learning coping skills, and support through deployments and moving. Activities include monthly afterschool meetings, Purple UP month, and support for families; especially during deployments.

As a member of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, Florida recognizes the need to provide support to students of military families. Today’s military children and families experience unique hardships. They move frequently and must adjust to new living environments, schools and peer groups much more than their civilian counterparts. They live through repeated cycles of separation and reunion.

The compact rules are designed to:

  • Facilitate the transfer of education records and enrollment
  • Promote smooth transitions to graduation
  • Promote seamless transitions for course and educational placements
  • Consider circumstances for excused absences
  • Facilitate eligibility for enrollment in school and extracurricular participation

Our Student-Led Transition Program

Our Puma-led program supports military-connected students and families as they join our school. It begins with a New Student Breakfast, where student leaders welcome newcomers and help them feel at home.

Student ambassadors connect with new military students, offering peer support, school tours, and classroom integration. They serve as friendly guides, helping students adjust socially and academically.

The program also provides families with helpful resources and community information to ease their transition. Regular check-ins ensure continued support throughout the school year.
